Verzasca Valley, Switzerland

Corippo

The Village

Nestled on a steep hillside in the heart of Ticino's Verzasca Valley, Corippo is a captivating Swiss village that seems untouched by time. With its cluster of stone houses, slate rooftops, and narrow cobbled lanes, the village offers a glimpse into a bygone era. Once Switzerland's smallest municipality, Corippo had just nine residents as of December 2019.

Historical Heritage

Corippo's roots reach back to the 13th century, first appearing in records as 'Culipo' in 1224. By 1374, the name had evolved to 'Quorippo,' and the settlement shared churches and governance with neighboring Vogorno. Founded as an independent commune in 1822 after separating from Vogorno, Corippo maintained its autonomy for nearly two centuries before merging with neighboring villages in 2020 to form the municipality of Verzasca. Despite its small size, the village boasts a rich architectural heritage. The entire center is protected under a national conservation order, and in 1975, it was recognized by the European Architectural Heritage Congress as an exemplary model of historical preservation.

Seven centuries of Corippo

History as a living experiment

Corippo has negotiated a sheer Ticinese slope since the 1200s, balancing terraced agriculture, diaspora remittances, and architectural stewardship. Today the village experiments with hospitality-led preservation while honoring its micro-society roots.

  • 1224

First written mention as Culipo in a local testament.

  • 1374

Name evolves to Quorippo; the village tightens ties to Vogorno parish.

  • 1822

Corippo gains political independence from Vogorno.

Preservation & Innovation

To combat depopulation and breathe new life into the village, the Fondazione Corippo 1975 initiated an innovative project: transforming Corippo into an "albergo diffuso" or "scattered hotel." This concept repurposes vacant homes into guest accommodations, allowing visitors to experience the village authentically while supporting its preservation.

Today's Corippo

Today, Corippo stands as a testament to sustainable tourism and cultural heritage. This vision has become reality – restored historic houses now welcome guests from around the world, while the village's serene atmosphere, historical charm, and breathtaking surroundings make it a unique destination for those seeking an immersive and tranquil retreat.

Beyond the new hotel concept, fresh life is also emerging among the homeowners who continue to shape the village’s character. The recently founded association “Vivere Corippo” aims to bring inhabitants closer together, fostering collaboration, shared initiatives, and a stronger sense of community, while also representing their collective voice in dialogue with local authorities and institutions.
